Syed Ehsanul Haque deserves to be commended for exposing the true face of India through dispassionate and realistic contents of his letter “UN double standard” (Feb. 11). Unfortunately, the double standard of the UN and the double-faced/hypocritical policy of India go hand in hand. According to the unwritten policy of the UN, as currently being practiced at the behest of superpowers, India is to be treated as a holy cow much like Israel.
Thus, it must be allowed to get away with impunity after unleashing the worst kind of state terrorism and atrocities against hapless and innocent Kashmiris, just as Israel cannot even be censured for all its crimes against Palestinians. The UN and the dominant powers controlling its dispensation, like US and Russia, will see no evil in such crimes. Such an indifferent attitude of the UN, imbued with hypocrisy and disguises, is the main cause of persecution of Kashmiris and Palestinians, resulting in lowering its credibility to ground zero.
Let us hope and pray that time will come when the UN will rise to the occasion and make amends for its gross strategic and tactical mistakes of the past. In words of Napoleon, “The world suffers a lot. Not because of bad people but because of the silence of good people.” To this a caveat may be added: The world also suffers because of the ignorance of some people who comment on the Kashmir issue without checking the historical facts. — Tariq Asghar, Jeddah
