The fuel tanker explosion in Riyadh that killed at least 22 people demonstrated how quickly the news spread beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia and the vast organizational methods to get aid to the victims.
Within seconds of the massive explosion, eyewitnesses flooded the social network Twitter with minute-by-minute updates of the unfolding events.
Using the hashtag (translated) #Riyadhexplosion, the events were trending rapidly, spreading the news in real time throughout the Kingdom complete with graphic images and videos of the explosion.
As for the people around the Kingdom, the news was handed to them in real time.
Twitter users took it upon themselves to send out word for blood donations for survivors. Saudis and expats quickly responded by lining up at clinics to donate blood.
Twitter user @BintBattuta87 wrote: “#Saudi: Due to crowded roads, vans being sent to take blood donations, call +966-1-8011111 to donate #RiyadhExplosion”
Another tweet was tweeted by @ObadahD: “New Hashtag encouraging to donate blood in nearby hospital of #RiyadhExplosion, some tweets are heading there now.”
Others were sharing their condolences on Twitter. One user wrote, “It’s incredibly heartbreaking when an avoidable disaster steals so many innocent lives.”
