Something to cheer about

This is in reference to the story, “Former Pak Army, ISI chiefs face legal action.” beleaguered Pakistani nation finally has something to cheer about after Pakistan’s Supreme Court endorsing what Pakistanis knew for a quite long time that 1990 general elections were rigged in favor of a nexus of political-religious parties. Such a remarkable judgment by the apex court opens the door for culprits and beneficiaries to get punished.

The other good news came from a UK hospital wherein Malala Yousufzai managed to stand for the first time since she was shot by Taleban. Another reason for celebration is that Pakistan is hosting, though not endorsed by the ICC, its first high profile international cricket event since 2009 when militants attacked a bus carrying the Sri Lankan players in Lahore. Since then Pakistan has been trying to convince the world community that it’s a safe place for hosting cricket matches, but so far not much success.

Amid this general sense of hopelessness among cricket fans that international cricket may not revive in Pakistan in foreseeable future, came the news that International World XI will play two T-20 exhibition matches against a Pakistan All Stars team in Karachi. We welcome Sindh government’s efforts to make this happen — to let Pakistanis watch international players in action on home ground. Sindh government has deployed troops and police force to provide foolproof security to players and spectators. We hope this will be a turning point for Pakistani cricket. — Masood Khan, Jubail
