ST. LOUIS: St. Louis pitcher Carlos Martinez was strong throughout his eight innings, steering the Cardinals to a 4-3 win against Pittsburgh on Friday, widening the gap at the top of the National League Central and contributing to a unique day in which all 15 home teams won.

Statistics provider STATS said the best previous unbeaten performance by home teams on a single day had been 11-0, accomplished six times; three in the 1800s. The most recent occasion was in 1989.

St. Louis’ victory was the most significant of the results, pushing the Cardinals six games clear of the Pirates, with about one third of the regular season remaining.

The other key result in the National League was a shutout victory for the West Division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers against Washington, which lost more ground in the fight for top spot in the East.

The Dodgers maintained their gap on San Francisco, which won a tight contest against Houston, while Kansas City had a comfortable win against Detroit.

St. Louis’ Jason Heyward had two hits and two RBIs. Yadier Molina tied the game with a sacrifice fly and rookie Stephen Piscotty singled in the go-ahead run on consecutive at-bats in the fifth inning. Piscotty had three hits.

The Cardinals lead the Pirates 6-5 in head-to-head clashes this season, with seven of the games decided by one run and five in the final at-bat.

Los Angeles’ Yasiel Puig drove in a career high-tying five runs with a homer and a triple to power the Dodgers past Washington 5-0.

Puig homered in the fourth to score Andre Ethier, whose leadoff triple stood after the Dodgers challenged the initial call that he was tagged out.

Dodgers starter Zack Greinke (12-2) pitched six sharp innings, with six strikeouts, to remain unbeaten in his past 10 starts, going 7-0 in that span. He lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.65.

San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner struck out 12 batters in a complete game to guide the Giants to a 3-1 win against Houston.

Bumgarner (13-6) outpitched Astros’ starter Scott Kazmir (6-7) in an anticipated interleague matchup of top lefties. It was Bumgarner’s eighth career complete game and second this season. He didn’t walk a batter in the 105-pitch gem.

Brandon Belt broke up the pitcher’s duel with solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings.

Kansas City’s Lorenzo Cain went 4 for 4 with a home run to lead the Royals past Detroit 6-1.

Cain, who raised his average to .316, led off the sixth with a mammoth shot over left field.

Royals starter Yordan Ventura (7-7), who is 3-1 since the All-Star break, struck out eight in six scoreless innings.

Cleveland’s Michael Brantley hit the winning single in the 16th inning to give the Indians a marathon 5-4 win against the faltering New York Yankees.

With one out, Brantley hit a hard single off Branden Pinder (0-2) that first baseman Mark Teixeira couldn’t handle and easily scored Jose Ramirez from second base. Brantley’s clutch hit ended the 5-hour, 4-minute game and triggered just the second walk-off winning celebration by the Indians this season.

The Yankees have lost four straight and seen their lead in the AL East trimmed to just half a game ahead of streaking Toronto, which won 4-2 against Oakland.

Jose Bautista hit a solo home run for the Blue Jays who have won nine straight games.

Drew Hutchison (11-2) allowed four hits as he completed seven innings for the first time in 11 weeks. Hutchison is 9-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 12 home starts versus a 2-1 record with a 9.00 ERA in 11 road outings.

Toronto starting pitchers have held the opposition to three earned runs or fewer in 15 consecutive games.

Chicago’s Carlos Rodon threw seven scoreless innings to steer the White Sox past the Los Angeles Angels 3-0.

Rodon (5-4) overcame the poor form that had seen him post a 9.33 ERA over his previous four starts, and struck out a career-high 11.

Chicago’s Trayce Thompson hit his first career home run as the Angels dropped their ninth straight home game; their longest such skid for 22 years.

The Chicago Cubs also won, beating Milwaukee 6-3, with Anthony Rizzo and Jorge Soler each driving in two runs.

Rizzo had two hits, including an RBI double, and drew a bases-loaded walk. He is 19 for 42 in his past 12 games, while Soler extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

Dan Haren (8-7) picked up his first victory for the Cubs, who have won 11 of their past 12 games.

Minnesota’s Eduardo Escobar drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, capping a late rally by the Twins for a much-needed 3-2 victory over Texas.

Seattle’s Austin Jackson hit a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning to give the Mariners a 6-5 victory over Baltimore.

New York’s Matt Harvey pitched eight scoreless innings to guide the Mets past Colorado 4-0, giving the team a win at home against the Rockies for the eighth straight time.

Tampa Bay’s Erasmo Ramirez pitched efficiently into the eighth inning for his first win in more than a month, as the Rays defeated Atlanta 2-0.

San Diego’s Colin Rea pitched well into the sixth inning in his major league debut to help the Padres win 11-6 against Cincinnati.

Arizona’s David Peralta hit a grand slam in an 11-run second inning and tied a career high with five RBIs, leading the Diamondbacks to a 13-1 rout of Philadelphia.

Miami’s Dee Gordon tripled to lead off the 10th inning and scored on a hit by Justin Bour to lift the Marlins to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Boston.
