Call this shooting the lights out.

Petron Blaze scored almost at will from afar Monday night and knocked Rain or Shine senseless in a 110-89 victory that put the Boosters in the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.

Marcio Lassiter hit 7-of-10 triple tries and Alex Cabagnot and import Elijah Millsap had their share of detonating long bombs as the Boosters bounced back from their only loss in the last 13 games to wrap up their best-of-five Final Four series and dethrone the Elasto Painters, 3-1.

“Right now, we’re living a dream and we can’t stop here,” rookie Petron coach Gee Abanilla told reporters after steering the squad to the 27th title series appearance of the franchise.

“That’s the essence of sports, that’s why we have to keep on competing,” Abanilla added as he tries to win the franchise’s 20th title beginning Friday against the San Mig Coffee Mixers at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

This series also marks the first time in 13 years that these sister teams, which used to be known as San Miguel and Purefoods before, will be clashing for a conference championship.

The Mixers also scored a 3-1 series win over a hard-fighting Meralco side on Sunday after a 79-73 win and their match-up for a title against the Boosters will mark the first time in 13 seasons.

Millsap, the leading contender for the Best Import award, finished with 34 points, Lassiter had 27 and Cabagnot scattered 24, including a four-point play over TY Tang with 5:28 remaining which made it 98-81.

The trio’s total was just four points shy of the entire output of Rain or Shine, which won this tournament at the expense of San Mig Coffee in seven exhilarating games last season.

Millsap, Lassiter and Cabagnot accounted for all of Petron’s 14 conversions from beyond the arc. The entire Rain or Shine crew hit just 10.

The Boosters actually answered the second half horn with a 16-0 run and bloated a 46-40 halftime lead to 62-40 before later on bloating it to as large as 25 when Millsap hit three straight charities, 70-45, entering the final 6:03 of the third period.

Cabagnot and Millsap scored a chunk of Petron’s points in that run, with Millsap shooting three straight free throws off Arizona Reid for that 25-point lead.

There was no stopping Petron from there as the Boosters refused to relax.

Rain or Shine did get to within 10 a couple of times because of sheer hard work, but Lassiter drained two straight triples and Cabagnot had another from about 30 feet to beat the 24-second shot clock for 89-73 going into the final eight minutes.

“We moved the ball very well, looked for the open man,” Lassiter said. “My threes, I just felt it. I just kept on shooting and it just happened to be a night when you shoot the lights (out).”

The next time that the Painters came within 10 at 79-89 after a Gabe Norwood triple, Lassiter drilled Rain or Shine in the gut with his seventh trey which touched off an 11-2 spurt for 100-81 going into the final 4:50.

Arizona Reid tried carrying the fight by himself for the Painters, with the former Best Import winner finishing with 41 points. But it was only Beau Belga, with 10, who was the only other player who finished in twin digits for coach Yeng Guiao.
