KANSAS CITY, Missouri: Kansas City’s Lorenzo Cain scored the winning run on a disputed play at the plate in the 10th inning to give the Royals a 3-2 win against Minnesota on Friday, ending a four-game losing skid and widening their division lead over the Twins to 4-1/2 games.

Over in the National League, leader St. Louis’ form slump continued with another home defeat by San Diego, the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly, and the unheralded Clint Robinson came up with the homer that lifted Washington over San Francisco.

Kansas City’s Cain led off the bottom of the 10th with a double — his third hit of the game — and went to third on a wild pitch by Aaron Thompson (1-3). Jarrod Dyson then hit a chopper toward onrushing Twins first baseman Joe Mauer who threw to home plate. Cain scored by racing in from third and just getting a hand onto the plate before being tagged.

The Twins challenged the call, but after a 99-second review the ruling on the field stood.

San Diego’s Jedd Gyorko homered in the seventh inning to tie the game and then had a run-scoring single in the ninth to lift the Padres to a 2-1 win at St. Louis.

Gyorko hit a full-count pitch from Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal (1-1) to bring in Yangervis Solarte, who earlier hit a one-out triple.

St. Louis, which did have a 29-7 record at home, has since lost its past four home games.

The Mets won 2-1 at the Dodgers, with Kevin Plawecki driving in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

Lucas Duda hit a mistimed double just inside the left-field line leading off the ninth against closer Kenley Jansen (2-1). Wilmer Flores followed with a single off Jansen’s glove, and Duda then scored on Plawecki’s fly to center field.

Mets starter Noah Snydergaard allowed one run over six innings with six strikeouts during a classic duel against Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw, who had one run over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Washington’s Clint Robinson, a 30-year-old non-roster invitee in spring training, hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Nationals a 2-1 victory over San Francisco.

Robinson, playing first base in place of the injured Ryan Zimmerman, hit his homer off Jake Peavy (0-3).

Washington starter Gio Gonzalez (6-4) allowed one run in seven innings to take the win in the first meeting of the two teams since the Giants beat the Nationals in the playoffs last year.

New York’s Brian McCann hit a three-run homer in the 12th inning, rallying the Yankees for a second time in a 7-5 victory over Tampa Bay, leapfrogging the Rays to the top of the AL East.

Brett Gardner led off the 12th with a walk from Steve Geltz (1-4). One out later, Alex Rodriguez and Teixeira hit consecutive singles, and McCann homered for the Yankees’ first walk-off win this season.

Tampa Bay lost its sixth in a row, and second straight in extra innings.

Houston capitalized on a Boston error to win 12-8 in 10 innings.

Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli allowed Preston Tucker’s grounder to bounce past him for an error, and Houston’s Carlos Correa followed with a tiebreaking single in a four-run 10th inning.

The AL West-leading Astros won after wasting three leads in four innings, and notched their fifth straight win.

Cleveland’s Michael Bourn drove in three runs to power the Indians to a 5-2 win against Pittsburgh on a rainy night.

Bourn’s two-run single in the eighth inning extended the Indians’ lead to 5-2 after Cleveland loaded the bases on a walk to David Murphy and singles by Yan Gomes and Giovanny Urshela.

Brandon Moss opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second, while starter Trevor Bauer allowed three hits in 6-1/3 innings.

The Los Angeles Angels won 8-2 at Texas in the first meeting of the teams since the Californian team traded Josh Hamilton back to the Rangers.

Hamilton, who insisted beforehand he had no extra emotions facing the Angels, went 1 for 3 with a double and two strikeouts.

Kole Calhoun drove in four runs with a pair of early doubles for Los Angeles, which matched a season high with 15 hits and won for the fifth time in six games to overtake Texas for second place in the AL West.

Detroit’s Anibal Sanchez held Toronto hitless until the eighth inning but the Tigers ended up with a narrow victory, beating the Blue Jays 8-6.

Chicago’s John Danks pitched seven scoreless innings to steer the White Sox to a 1-0 victory over Baltimore.

Miami’s Justin Bour and Christian Yelich homered to give the Marlins a 2-1 win against the Chicago Cubs.

Seattle’s Nelson Cruz, Seth Smith, Brad Miller and Logan Morrison all hit two-run homers to power the Mariners past Oakland 9-5.
