MANILA: Talk about a night to remember and June Mar Fajardo will never forget this one.

San Miguel Beer’s talented franchise player won a second straight MVP award just before Game 4 on Friday night and came up with his valedictory speech of 19 points and 21 rebounds in helping the Beermen complete a four-game sweep of Alaska in the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.

Fajardo picked up from where Arizona Reid left off in the third period, scoring 10 points in a crippling 18-2 assault bridging the final two quarters as San Miguel rallied from as large as 14 points behind to win, 91-81, and be a champion for the second time this season.

Before more than 14,000 screaming souls at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Fajardo was at his best and his heroics came after Reid almost singlehandedly rallied the Beermen with a torrid third quarter show where he drained four of his six triples.

From 63-all, Fajardo scored two straight buckets inside and had six more of San Miguel’s first 11 points in the fourth as the Beermen put Alaska in an 81-65 hole the Aces were never able to climb out of.

The sweet sweep of the Aces was just the fifth such championship series shut out in 40 seasons of Asia’s pioneering professional league, and it gave the PBA’s oldest franchise its 21st championship that extended the all-time mark.

Alaska finished runner-up for the second time this season, with the first also coming against these same Beermen in the Philippine Cup Finals that went to an epic Game 7.

San Miguel carved out a fourth straight win in the very same manner that it did so in the last three games of the series.

Like in Games 2 and 3, the Beermen also held Alaska scoreless for a critical stretch in the second half.

That 63-all tie happened with still 2:26 left in the third quarter after a Romeo Travis basket for the Aces, but Alaska’s next bucket in the third would come at the final 1:04 mark for 65-67.

San Miguel would then allow the next Alaska basket to come with 7:05 left in the fourth, and by that time, the Beermen had scampered to that 16-point lead and had all the momentum they needed to finish off the game Aces.

While the Beermen celebrated their return to the top, Fajardo was simply a show by himself in the season that just ended.

After becoming the second youngest player behind former mentor Danny Ildefonso to win a second straight MVP, Fajardo was just the fourth player to do so after legends William ‘Bogs’ Adornado and Alvin Patrimonio.

He also earned obvious inclusion in the Mythical First Team and to the All-Defensive Team and was given the Sportsmanship Award before scooping the Finals MVP trophy as named by the PBA Press Corps.

Reid finished with 33 points, and Marcio Lassiter was the third player in twin digits for the Beermen with 12.

Calvin Abueva scored 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Aces, who enjoyed their biggest lead of the series, 49-35, near the end of the second quarter. Alaska protected a double-digit lead going into the final six minutes of the third before Reid caught fire.

“For us, AZ is our Best Import,” San Miguel coach Leo Austria said in praise of Reid, who narrowly lost that award to Alaska’s Romeo Travis before the start of Game 2 last week.

Travis, like he has done ever since being named the Best Import, continued with his struggles, finishing with just 15 points and seven rebounds in being totally outplayed – again – by Reid in almost all fronts.

Also coming home with prestigious awards were Stanley Pringle of Globalport for Rookie of the Year, Terrence Romeo, also of Globalport, for being the Most Improved Player and Greg Slaughter of Barangay Ginebra, Jason Castro of Talk 'N Text and Paul Lee of Rain or Shine for joining Fajardo in the Mythical First Team.
