This is in response to the story, “International community urged to stop ‘summary executions’ in Bangladesh.” I congratulate Arab News on taking up issues that often go unnoticed and are ignored by the media. It has added value to Arab News journalism.
Prime Minister Hasina Wajid’s government aims to target responsible members of the community and the country in the name of “War Criminals.” Toby Cadman has rightly pointed out that “The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) falls short of international standards and violates norms of fair trial spelled out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which Bangladesh is bound by.”
The international community needs to persuade the Bangladesh government to take a more “balanced” approach in the governance. In the prevailing situations how can one expect ordinary people to benefit from legal proceedings? The judiciary has repeatedly been accused of being used by political foes to harass inner circle and those who are against them during political infightings. — Ilyas Sultan, By e-mail
