Saudi boy students and their teachers at government schools will get free transport in state-owned buses from the beginning of the new academic year, said a representative of the Tatweer Educational Transportation Services Company.
Free government transport was introduced for girl students a number of years ago.
Government wants all students and teachers to have safe and convenient transport between their homes and schools, the official told Arab News at the International Exhibition and Forum for Education (IEFE) in on Wednesday.
The transport will be for all Saudi male students from grade one to 12. The program is currently being tested at certain schools.
The program was created as a subsidiary of the Tatweer Educational Holding Company (THC), which is wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).
The Tatweer Educational Transportation Services Company is an independent limited liability company with full capacity to implement the tasks assigned to it in accordance with the law, the official said.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are working together to produce science and mathematics curricula to prepare students for the workplace, said UAE Minister of Education Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al-Qatami in a statement released at the IEFE yesterday.
He was one of a number of Arab education ministers who attended the event in the capital city.
Al-Qatami praised the Saudi government and Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for building an advanced education system in the Kingdom.
He said Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are focusing on providing top quality education for their citizens.
The minister said he was pleased to have met Prince Faisal bin Abdullah, the Saudi minister of education and other ministers from the GCC to exchange views and experiences.
