The electricity regulatory authority (ERA) will organize a workshop on Feb 9, 2013, in Riyadh aimed at drawing up a national strategy for the application of smart meters and networks in the Kingdom.
The ERA has finalized the first stage of the project, which was aimed to determine technical standards and infrastructure requirements of the digital meters and networks, according to the Saudi press agency.
In October 2012, the ERA signed a contract with Shezi Middle East Company to conduct the study on a smart meter project.
The one-day workshop will explore the outcome of the study which will be joined by those concerned with electricity industry and smart meters and networks applications, Head of Technical Affairs at ERA Eng. Faiz Al-Jabri was quoted as saying.
Enumerating the positive aspects of the smart meter system, he said the system would facilitate the reading of meters from the main control center, enable service providers to keep in touch with customers and reinstate services remotely, a matter that will improve services and performance.
