LUCKNOW, India: Police say a bus has rolled down a gorge on a mountainous road and killed at least 16 people in northern India.

Police officer Manohar Singh Tamta says 22 other passengers were injured, 11 of them seriously, in Saturday’s crash in Uttrakhand state.

The New Delhi-bound bus fell 200 meters (655 feet) into the gorge, nearly 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of neighboring Uttar Pradesh state.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
