GAUHATI, India: Police say a bus has fallen into a pond in India’s remote northeast, killing 13 people.

Police say 16 other people aboard the bus were injured when the driver lost control of the vehicle after a tire burst Wednesday in Tripura state.

Seven others escaped unharmed. The accident site is 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Tripura, the state capital.

Police said six of the victims died on the spot, and seven died either at or on their way to the hospital.

Bus accidents are common in India, due mainly to vehicle overcrowding, badly maintained roads and aged vehicles. About 240,000 people die in road accidents every year in the country, according to the transportation ministry’s last assessment in 2013.
