WASHINGTON: Bernie Sanders turned his long-shot presidential bid into a bigger battle for the Democratic nomination. Now, as his path becomes all-but-impossible, some supporters are lashing out at a system they believe was engineered against them.
Nancy Schumacher of Minnesota says she wanted to do her civic duty, and so she heeded the call to become a superdelegate for Hillary Clinton. Those are the delegates who can support whoever they want at the national convention, no matter how their states vote.
She says she gets phone and e-mail messages trying to persuade her to switch to Sanders. Some call her names. Some call Clinton names. Other superdelegates say they get the same sort of calls.
The Sanders campaign assures everyone that it doesn’t condone harassment. Yet superdelegates say it continues.
