BANGUI, Central African Republic: Around a dozen French tanks deployed Wednesday at Bangui’s airport as intense gunfire in adjoining neighborhoods sowed panic among residents, an AFP journalist reported.

The tanks took positions at around 4:15 p.m. (1515 GMT) at the entrance to the airport, where French and African peacekeepers are based.
