ST. PETERSBURG, Florida: Police say a 25-year-old Tampa man faces a first-degree murder charge after throwing his 5-year-old daughter off a bridge.

John Jonchuck Jr. was arrested early Thursday after a St. Petersburg police officer saw him throw the child into Tampa Bay. Police say rescuers pulled Phoebe Jonchuk from the water, but she died shortly before 3 a.m.

The officer was heading home around midnight when he saw a speeding car and tried to pull it over.

Police say Jonchuck stopped on a bridge on the approach to the Sunshine Skyway and threw the child over the rail. He returned to his car, drove south and was arrested about 30 minutes later in Manatee County.

He faces additional charges, including aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer.

Meanwhile, authorities say a 15-year-old girl suffered years of abuse at home before she broke into her parents’ locked room while they were away, took their gun and shot her 16-year-old brother to death.

Authorities on Wednesday released police documents and interviews describing the abuse, including that the girl was locked in a room for weeks at a time with only a blanket and a bucket to use the bathroom.

The shooting in rural north Florida happened Monday while the children’s parents were out of town for work. The father is a truck driver and his wife often goes with him. They left their 16-year-old son to watch over the 15-year-old, her 11-year-old sister and their 3-year-old sister.
