Nov. 8, 2013, Philippines: Super Typhoon Haiyan slams the central Philippines with winds of up to 315 km/hour and tsunami-like storm surges. Two weeks later, the official death toll is put at 5,209, with another 1,611 people missing.

Dec. 4, 2012, Philippines: Typhoon Bopha smashes into the southern island of Mindanao. Some 1,900 people are killed or missing.

Dec. 16-17, 2011, Philippines: Typhoon Washi hits Mindanao, killing 1,268 people and affecting a total of more than 700,000.

June 20, 2008, Philippines: Typhoon Fengshen leaves around 600 dead or missing after it triggers flooding and landslides in central parts of the country. More than 800 other people die when a ferry boat sinks.

May 3, 2008, Myanmar: Cyclone Nargis ravages the south, leaving 138,000 dead or missing in the Irrawaddy Delta.

Nov. 15, 2007, Bangladesh: Cyclone Sidr leaves at least 4,100 people dead or missing and 8.7 million others facing widespread damage to homes and businesses.

Aug. 29-30, 2005, United States: Hurricane Katrina devastates southern states, killing around 1,800 people and causing damage estimated in the tens of billions of dollars. Around 80 percent of New Orleans is flooded when storm levees give way.

Sept. 17-19, 2004, Haiti: Flooding caused by Hurricane Jeanne kills 1,870 people and leaves 850 others missing.

Oct. 29, 1999, India: At least 10,000 people die or go missing after a hurricane smashes the eastern state of Orissa.

Oct. 26-Nov. 5, 1998, Central America: Hurricane Mitch kills more than 9,000 people, leaves as many missing and 2.5 million homeless, mainly in Honduras and Nicaragua. It is accompanied by the eruption of a volcano northwest of Managua.

June 9, 1998, India: A typhoon kills more than 1,000 people in the western state of Gujarat.

Nov. 2, 1995, Philippines: Typhoon Angela leaves some 1,000 people dead or missing.

Nov. 5, 1991, Philippines: Typhoon Thelma swamps the eastern island of Leyete, leaving more than 6,000 people dead or missing.
