ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Parliament speaker Ayaz Sadiq was disqualified on Saturday over alleged rigging in the 2013 general election and re-election ordered on his National Assembly seat, officials said.

A petition had been filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan challenging Sadiq’s victory in the 2013 elections. Khan who had been defeated by Sadiq in the constituency alleged widespread rigging, Geo TV reported.

The tribunal also ordered re-polling in PP-147 and PP-148 constituencies. Sadiq will challenge the tribunal’s decision in the Supreme Court.

Speaking to the media outside the tribunal premises Ali Sadiq, the son of Ayaz Sadiq, said the tribunal's decision did not state that rigging had taken place in the constituency.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, another PTI leader, welcomed the decision, adding that Sadiq had the right to challenge the tribunal’s ruling.
