1. The captain of the ferry which capsized in South Korea killing 300 people, most of them schoolchildren, ran away from his duties. So did members of his crew. He has been given 36 years and not charged with murder. The next of kin are unhappy. They wanted more. These seamen could have saved lives that were lost because of their cowardice. No other nautical incident shows such a dereliction of duty as this one.

2. Get out of here. How can the MH370 search be called off if the authorities give a date for officially stating that the Triple Seven with 239 people aboard was lost. That would mean calling off the search which began the day the plane vanished…March 8 of this year.

3. A government sponsored sterilization program in India’s Chattisgarh state ended up in ghastly fashion with 10 women dying from infection and a botched job. Doctors or butchers.

4. Seven out of 21 new ministers in the larger Modi Cabinet have criminal charges against them including murder and rape but the one eligibility needed is that they must have inhouse toilets.

5. Militants continue to hold sway in Pakistan, in Iraq, in Syria and in Nigeria. Over 300 killed this week in fusillades of fury.

6. Some sicko scared the wits out of new Zealand Parliament and media houses by sending bottles of liquid marked Ebola. They are being tested while the toll has risen in West Africa to 4,960 already. Meanwhile, Mali becomes the next new country to report a case of the dreaded disease. She was a nurse in a clinic.

7. President Obama in an effort to make peace with China and allay fears that Washington was trying to contain China’s progress gave in and acknowledged Tibet as an integral part of China, thereby negating efforts by the Tibetan exiles led by the Dalai Lama to losing a major ally in their efforts to regain their homeland. Said the US president; we don’t believe in its independence. So much for that.

8. The relationships between Fatah and Hamas deteriorates as both groups trade accusations and denials that they’re harming the unity of the Palestinian cause following bomb blasts in Gaza. President Mahmoud Abbas pointedly told Hamas to honor the agreement the two had made toward reconciliation.

9. As many as 43 young people were killed in Mexico by a gang ostensibly supported by corrupt police because the students were on a fund-raising drive and had ‘hijacked’ four buses to return home. Six were killed and 43 abducted. They have been missing for two months and reports indicate they were given by the cops to drug lords who have got rid of them. Mexicans are outraged and protests have shaken the country and are still on.

10. Conservatives in Pakistan held a ‘I am not Malala’ initiative in which almost 200,000 schools took part and that meant as high as 20 million kids. While she may be the youngest Nobel laureate and a global heroine who took on the Taleban and is a fierce fighter for women’s right Malala Yousafzai has been criticized in her homeland.
