JEDDAH, 5 March 2005 — Al-Qadisiya handed fancied Al-Shabab a shock defeat 4-3 via the penalty shootout yesterday to become the first team to qualify for the semifinals in the Crown Prince Cup soccer tournament at the Prince Faisal ibn Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. The aggregate score was 6-5 after the teams tied 2-2 at regulation and extra times.
Qadisiya came up with a surprisingly strong performance to take the measure of Shabab, who became the second of the top four team to get eliminated after Al-Ahli failed to survive the round of 16.
Qadisiya led Shabab 1-0 at the end of the first half after striker Yasir Al-Qahtani scored on a nice cross inside the penalty box in the 45th minute.
Shabab quickly equalized in the 47th minute on a penalty kick after their striker Muhammad Manga was tackled inside the penalty box. The same player scored the equalizer past the right hand side of the goalie.
Qadisiya soon took the lead in the 53rd minute when Abdu Hakami received a nice through and slammed home his team’s second goal. As the game was drawing to a close, Shabab equalized in the 88th minute when Abdu Autaif who took the ball and made his way inside the penalty box before putting the ball into the right corner of the net. The match went to penalty kicks after both teams were still tied at 2-2 after two extra times.
