JEDDAH, 7 March 2005 — Al-Hilal found Al-Wehda tough to beat needing a goal in injury time yesterday to advance into the semifinals in the Crown Prince Cup soccer tournament.
The 1-0 victory before a large crowd in Makkah set the Riyadh-based Hilal squad up to a final four clash against the winner of the last quarterfinal match today between Jeddah’s Al-Ittihad and Al-Taie of Hail.
Al-Nasr and Al-Qadisiya, who both earlier qualified, clash in the other semifinal contest. Al-Nasr put paid to hopes of giant-killer Watani with a 1-0 triumph Saturday, while Qadisiya on Friday took out Al-Shabab in penalty shootout 4-3 after both teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra times.
To the delight of their fans, Wehda held their own against the fancied Hilal who were made to earn their victory in the penultimate semifinal game. Both teams were scoreless at regulation period.
Mohamed Al-Shalhoub scored the winner for Hilal when he converted a penalty kick two minutes into injury time.
