OKLAHOMA CITY, 20 March 2005 — Bucknell’s Chris McNaughton banked in a hook shot with 10.5 seconds left and Kansas’ Wayne Simien missed a jumper from the foul line as time expired, as the Bison stunned the Jayhawks, 64-63, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Kevin Bettencourt scored 19 points and Charles Lee added 15 for Bucknell (23-9), which advanced to take on Wisconsin in a second-round match-up today.

Bucknell became the first-ever team out of the Patriot League to earn an NCAA Tournament victory and the first No. 14 seed to win a first-round game since Weber State defeated North Carolina in 1999. Simien scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for third-seeded Kansas (23-7), which had won its previous 21 first-round NCAA Tournament games. The Jayhawks’ most recent lost in the first round came to UCLA in 1978.

At Worcester, Mass., Julius Hodge had a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds to lead North Carolina State to a 75-63 win over Charlotte in the DCU Center. The Wolfpack, seeded 10th in the Syracuse bracket, will face Florida today. Andrew Brackman added 16 points and six boards for the Wolfpack (20-13), who are in the midst of their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

At Nashville, Tenn., Anthony Roberson scored five straight points for Florida in the final minute to thwart a stirring Ohio rally, as the Gators pulled out a 67-62 victory over the upset-minded Bobcats.

Roberson finished with 11 points and Matt Walsh added 18 for the Gators, who watched a 20-point lead disappear before scoring seven straight to win their eighth consecutive game.

Florida (24-7), which captured its first-ever SEC Tournament title last Sunday with a 17-point win over Kentucky, is seeded fourth in the Syracuse bracket and will have a second-round match-up today against Villanova.

Mychal Green scored 24 points to lead Ohio (21-11), which won the Mid-American championship with a thrilling overtime triumph over Buffalo to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994.

At Charlotte, N.C., Curtis Stinson scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Iowa State to a 64-53 victory over Minnesota at Charlotte Coliseum. The Cyclones, seeded ninth in the Syracuse bracket, will next face North Carolina in the second round today. Rahshon Clark and Jared Homan each netted 14 points for Iowa State (19-11). Homan also pulled down 13 boards and blocked seven shots.Brent Lawson and Vincent Grier paced the eighth-seeded Golden Gophers with 14 points apiece. Aaron Robinson finished with 11 points for Minnesota (21-11).

Also in Charlotte, Marvin Williams scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as North Carolina rolled to a 96-68 victory over Oakland.

In a later Nashville game, Mike Nardi scored 15 points and Randy Foye added 14, as Villanova raced out to a big lead and held on for a 55-47 victory over New Mexico in the first round. Villanova led by as many as 24 in the first half and saw its lead trimmed down to five, but made enough free throws down the stretch to win for the ninth time in its last 10 games. The lone loss in that stretch was a last-second, two-point heartbreaker to West Virginia in the Big East semifinals.

In a later Worcester game, Charlie Villanueva scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Connecticut Huskies to a 77-71 victory over Central Florida. Rudy Gay added 17 points for the defending national champions. Denham Brown contributed 11 points and eight boards for the Huskies (23-7), who out-rebounded the Golden Knights, 43-29, and were ahead by 19 in the second half before holding off a late rally.

In Oklahoma City, Kammron Taylor scored 16 points, including six in the final 1:03, to lead Wisconsin to a 57-52 win over Northern Iowa in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sharif Chambliss added 15 points for the sixth-seeded Badgers (23-8), who advanced to take on the winner of Kansas and Bucknell in a second-round match-up in the Syracuse Bracket today.
