JEDDAH, 6 April 2005 — Inspired by their huge 2-0 win over Al-Ismaeili of Egypt last Sunday in the Arab Champions League competition, Al-Ahli will be at home to Pakhtakor of Uzbekistan today as they resume their campaign in the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Champions League.
The Jeddah-based Ahli lead Group D with six points in two games following victories over Al-Zawraa of Iraq 2-1 and Al-Jaish of Syria. Ahli are looking to continue the winning streak in a bid to qualify for the next stage of the competition as first of the group. Pakhtakor is in second place in the group with three points from one win and one loss.
Ahli canceled the dayoff given to all players after that huge win last Sunday and continued training.
Meantime, Al Ittihad lost the first leg of their quarterfinal home and away match against M.C. Algiers in the Arab Champions League.
The 1-0 away defeat snapped the run of victories by Saudi clubs after Ahli and Hilal scored successes at home.
The lone goal of the match played in Algeria came from Amar Bin Ali in the 72nd minute when his free kick sailed high and low into the net to the delight of the wildly cheering Algerian fans who lit up the night sky with fireworks display. The return leg will be played in Jeddah on April 23.
Ittihad had many chances but then failed to convert during the first half. They played with all three international stars that played against Kuwait in action. Adding to Ittihad woes was when the Egyptian referee disallowed a Sergio Herrera header from a corner kick in the second half.
