TORONTO, 15 April 2005 — Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams rocked World Series hero Curt Schilling for sixth inning homers to power the New York Yankees to a 5-2 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday.

Schilling (0-1), back on the mound for the first time since pitching in Game Two of the World Series, got his season debut off to a strong start by tossing four shutout innings and holding the Yankees to just three hits.

However, the 38-year-old, who played in the World Series despite having blood seep through the sock of his damaged right ankle, was finally chased from the hill with two out in the sixth after giving up five runs on nine hits, striking out five and walking one.

In Kansas City, Aaron Sele pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and gave up just three hits to helping the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 win over the Royals giving manager Mike Hargrove his 1,000th career win. Sele (1-0) had three strikeouts and walked two and combined with three relievers to get the win.

In Arlington, Chan Ho Park pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and Michael Young went 2-for-4 at the plate driving in three runs as the Texas Rangers stopped the Los Angeles Angels 7-5 to post their first home win of the season.

In Minneapolis, Terry Tiffee powered the Minnesota Twins to an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers with a two-run homer and a career-high three RBIs. The Twins scoring five runs, rocking Detroit starter Jason Johnson (1-1) for seven consecutive hits and a walk before he made way for Matt Ginter.

In Cleveland, Juan Uribe’s 10th inning sacrifice fly drove in AJ Pierzynski with the winning run lifting the Chicago White Sox a 5-4 win over the Indians.

In Oakland, Jason Kendall and Keith Ginter each drove in a pair of runs as the Athletics scored four runs in the eighth to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3.

Impressive Willis Steers Marlins to Victory

Dontrelle Willis pitched his second complete game shutout of the new season as the Florida Marlins pounded the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 in National League action in Miami on Wednesday.

Willis (2-0), who blanked the Washington Nationals in his previous start, was again brilliant on the mound, holding the Phillies to just three hits, all singles, while striking out seven and walking one. The Marlins offense was not overpowering but did not need to be with the 23-year-old left-hander on the hill.

In Chicago, Geoff Blum cracked a pair of home runs and Brian Giles and Ryan Klesko also went deep, powering the San Diego Padres to an 8-3 win in the first game of their doubleheader at Wrigley Field. The Padres took control with a four-run first inning, Blum tagging Cubs starter Kerry Wood (0-1) for a leadoff homer.

In the afternoon game, Mark Prior (1-0) pitched six shutout innings in his season debut and Derrek Lee had five RBIs to earn the Cubs a split with the Padres with an 8-3 win.

In Atlanta, Jose Guillen hammered two homers and drove in four runs as the Washington Nationals crushed the Braves 11-4, sending them back to the capital for their long awaited home opener on a winning note.

In New York, Jose Reyes’ groundball single drove in Victor Diaz earning the Mets a 1-0 11th inning win over the Houston Astros, the winning run wasting a sparkling performance by Roger Clemens.

In St. Louis, Matt Belisle pitched five strong innings in his first major league start and Adam Graves worked out of a bases loaded jam to get the save, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 decision over the Cardinals.

In Milwaukee, Geoff Jenkins and Lyle Overbay homered and Carlos Lee and Damian Miller each hit two-run doubles in a four-run eighth inning rally, lifting the Brewers to a 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In Phoenix, Shawn Estes pitched seven quality innings and the Arizona bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring four runs as the Diamondbacks downed the Colorado Rockies 5-2 to complete a three-game series sweep.
