TORONTO, 20 April 2005 — The New York Yankees responded to owner George Steinbrenner’s scathing criticism with a record-breaking inning and a 19-8 demolition of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Yankee Stadium on Monday.

A day after Steinbrenner blasted his $200 million team for its stumbling start to the season, the Yankees showed the kind of devastating power they are capable of by pounding the Devil Rays for 20 hits — 11 coming in a record-breaking second inning. The Yankees (5-8) sent 17 batters to the plate in the second, bringing across 13 runs in the biggest inning ever seen at Yankee Stadium and tying a Major League record.

In Boston, Manny Ramirez’s two homers drove in five runs as the Red Sox cruised to a 12-7 demolition of the Toronto Blue Jays. Ramirez pounded a three-run homer in the second and added a two-run shot in the sixth as Boston won their fifth straight game.

In Baltimore, Dmitri Young and Omar Infante both homered as the Detroit Tigers pounded Orioles pitchers for 16 hits on their way to a 13-3 win.

In Anaheim, Vladimir Guerrero and Darin Erstad homered and Paul Byrd provided eight good innings as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1.

In Kansas City, Casey Blake and Ben Broussard had back-to-back second-inning homers and Cliff Lee pitched seven shutout innings to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 5-1 win over the Royals

In Arlington, Eric Chavez homered and Danny Haren earned his first win of the season as the Oakland Athletics claimed an 8-5 decision over the Texas Rangers.

In Chicago, Carl Everett homered twice as the White Sox rallied past the Minnesota Twins 5-4.

Ryan Langerhans smacked a pinch-hit home run in the 12th inning to earn the Atlanta Braves a 1-0 victory over the Astros as Tim Hudson and Roger Clemens carved out a classic pitching duel in Houston on Monday.

In Milwaukee, Milton Bradley homered from both sides of the plate and Odalis Perez carried a no-hitter into the seventh as the Los Angeles Dodgers eased to a 7-3 win over the Brewers.

In Cincinnati, Adam Dunn homered twice for the second time this season as the Reds rallied from a four-run deficit to record a 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

In Washington, Dontrelle Willis pitched six solid innings and Miguel Cabrera went three-for-five at the plate as the Florida Marlins scored a 9-4 victory over the Nationals, handing them their first home loss of the season.

In Pittsburgh, Mark Mulder allowed just two hits over eight innings and Jim Edmonds homered driving in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals crushed the Pirates 11-1.
