JEDDAH, 27 April 2005 — More than 60 players, most of them Saudis and including one Kuwaiti and expatriates, are entered in a three-day Squash Open Tournament for Charity at Jeddah InterContinental Hotel Sports Club which starts today.
Orphans’ Friends Committee of Albir Charitable Society is organizing the tournament for the second year in a row, with the support of Jeddah Governor Prince Mishaal ibn Majed.
“The event aims to help raise funds for charity work,” Saleh Al-Turki, chairman of the Albir Charitable Society, told reporters on Monday.
The championship is also meant to help promote squash among young Saudis and discover potential talents among them.
The championship is under the supervision of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare. The sponsors include Traco Marble & Ceramic Company, United Sugar Company (Family Sugar), KIA Motors, MBC Panorama and Al Bilad newspaper, aside from the InterContinental Hotel.
The open tournament has cash prizes for the first eight places, ranging from SR8,000 to SR500.
Additionally, there are prizes for players who give an outstanding performance. Suhail Nageeb, who heads the organizing committee, said matches would be played today and tomorrow. The tournament final is set for Friday.
