TORONTO, 1 May 2005 — Livan Hernandez scattered nine hits over eight innings and also homered as the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 5-1 in National League play Friday at RFK Stadium.

Hernandez (3-2) was in trouble constantly but allowed just one run with five strikeouts and two walks.

The NL leader in complete games and innings pitched the past two seasons, Hernandez threw 130 pitches before Chad Cordero eventually got the last two outs in the ninth inning for his fifth save. The Nationals (12-11) made the most of just five hits, with Jose Guillen and Brian Schneider also hitting solo homers for Washington.

In other NL games, Mark Mulder pitched seven strong innings for his third win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Braves 6-5 in Atlanta.

In Pittsburgh, Brett Tomko pitched a complete-game four-hitter as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pirates 3-2.

In Philadelphia, A.J. Burnett (3-1) pitched seven strong innings as the Florida Marlins beat the Phillies 6-4. Burnett (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits, striking out eight. Damion Easley and Miguel Cabrera both homered.

In Milwaukee, Lyle Overbay belted two home runs as the Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3. Overbay had three hits and drove in four runs for the Brewers, while Gary Glover (2-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

In Houston, Greg Maddux out-dueled Roger Clemens in a battle of 330 game winners as the Chicago Cubs edged the Astros 3-2. Jeff Bagwell had a homer in the third, while Mike Lamb had one RBI for the Astros.

In Los Angeles, Hee Seop Choi hit a grand slam home run as the Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3. J.D. Drew added a two-run homer for the Dodgers. Odalis Perez (4-1) went seven innings for the win, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts.

In San Diego, Phil Nevin drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the 15th inning, giving the Padres a 5-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chris Hammond (2-0) got five outs in relief for the win.

Blue Jays Beat Slumping Yankees

Roy Halladay tossed a complete-game three-hitter and Eric Hinske hit a two-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays blanked the struggling New York Yankees 2-0 in American League play Friday at Yankee Stadium.

Halladay (4-1) struck out nine and got the best of Randy Johnson in a pitchers’ duel that took just two hours and eight minutes to play.

Toronto won its fourth straight game while the Yankees lost their third straight to slip to 9-14, just one game out of last place in the AL East.

In other AL games, C.C. Sabathia (2-0) pitched seven shutout innings as the Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0.

In Baltimore, Erik Bedard (2-1) pitched eight strong innings as the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-0. Bedard (2-1) allowed just five hits, striking out eight, and retiring 14 of the first 15 batters.

In Arlington, Chan Ho Park pitched seven strong innings as the Texas Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 7-2.

In Minneapolis, Carlos Silva pitched seven strong innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4.

In Chicago, Nook Logan tripled in the go-ahead run in the 11th innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the White Sox 3-2.

In Seattle, Ichiro Suzuki had three hits as the Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2. Bret Boone homered for Seattle. Aaron Sele (2-2) allowed one run on seven hits over six innings for the win and Eddie Guardado pitched the ninth for his eighth save.
