JEDDAH, 2 May 2005 — Ameer Wajeeh, an Egyptian, won the Charity Squash Championship at the three-day event, which ended at Jeddah InterContinental Hotel on Friday night. He received a cash prize of SR8,000.
Rec Khan, a Pakistani, won the runner-up prize of SR6,000. Another Pakistani, Essa Khan, was in third place. He received SR3,500 as his prize.
The other winners who received cash prizes were Youseif Khan, a Pakistani, and Mohammad Al-Saief, both received SR 2,500, Abdullah ibn Suleiman SR1,500, Naif Abu Rica SR750, and Akbar Khan, SR500.
Sixty-four players, most of them Saudi, and one from Kuwait took part in the second annual tournament organized by the orphans’ Friends Committee of Albir Charitable Society, with the support of Jeddah Governor Prince Mishaal ibn Majed.
Albir Charitable Society Chairman Saleh Al-Turki said the tournament served the purpose of raising funds for charity work.
“It also helped a great deal in promoting squash among young Saudis and discover potential talents. In fact, we find the participation among Saudi enthusiasts has marked a big increase,” he said.
The championship was held under the supervision of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare.
“The standard of squash played especially by both experienced and young Saudis was quite high,” Suhail Nageeb, chairman of the organizing committee of the tournament, said.
Visibly satisfied with the support lent to the championship were its sponsors who included Traco Marble & Ceramic Company, United Sugar Company (family sugar), KIA Motors, MBC Panorama, and Al Bilad newspaper, aside from the InterContinental Hotel which offered its professionally maintained squash courts for the event.
