Green Card proposal

I read with interest the article “Green Card: A ray of hope for expats” (April 27) by Abdulateef Al-Mulhim. I liked the manner in which the writer raised the issue. The best thing about the writer is that we could relate to his writing. He does not write for himself. He writes for his readers, which is a unique quality.
Issuing permanent residency to eligible expatriates will help the Kingdom develop much faster. We should learn from the experience of developed countries. The United States of America is called the nation of nations. We all know its status in the world. The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are other examples.
The Saudi Vision 2030 is undoubtedly a comprehensive strategy to boost the economy of the Kingdom. The proposed green cards for expatriates will help them to make long-term plans. The implementation of the system will result in the mushroom growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Those well-versed with the basics of economics know well the importance of SMEs. The economy of a country cannot entirely depend on foreign investments. Domestic investment is also necessary to keep the wheel of development moving.
In addition to the issuance of permanent residency, the sponsorship system should also be abolished. This system hampers the movement of talent from one organization to another and due to the difficulties involved in the procedure, talented people are left at the mercy of employers who exploit the foreign workers.
The authorities should not only focus on a business-friendly environment, they should also try to make working conditions better for workers. It will also help boost the productivity level of workers.
