The Dhahran High School held their annual charitable art show and auction recently.
The proceeds of this event went to Habitat for Humanity, a charity that helps build houses for the homeless in the less economically developed countries, and The Citizens Foundation, a nonprofit organization that improves education resources in Pakistan.
“This is the 13th art show held in support of the two organizations,” said Abeera Atique, the department head of arts at Dhahran High School and a celebrated artist with an international following.
“We auctioned students’ artwork to raise money for charity,” she said, and pointed out this year they raised the record amount of SR47,000.
“Last year, we raised SR32,000,” she said. “We have come a long way. In our first year, we only managed SR1,100. From then on our students have produced quality artworks helping us raise more and more money for charity.”
Over 1,000 artworks were displayed at the show. These included photographs, wood burnings and paintings. Among the eye-catchers was a painting that looked completely ordinary until one saw the three-dimensional hand sticking out of the canvas.
“I was surprised, and even a little scared, when I saw the hand,” said Atique. “Another work that I found interesting was a big cylindrical structure. When spun and viewed from the right angle, it revealed an animation of the fish.”
“The 2012 Dhahran Art Show was a great success,” said student Grace Zhu. “Alas, this is my last year with Dhahran High School, but I am sure, under the guidance of Ms. Abeera, we will continue to organize these amazing art shows for students to show off their work and to contribute to a good cause.”
