The reigning champion team GCT Terminal scored back-to-back victories beating great rival last season, Hidada, which was unable to come back in the game and suffered its second straight defeat last weekend in the 2012 Boy Teves Second Reinforced Basketball Tournament organized by the Overseas Filipino Basketball League (OFBL) at Timeout Sports Academy gymnasium on Television Street, Ghulail District on the outskirts of Jeddah.
The three-point specialist Nava waxed hot from beyond the arc while the reigning Best Center Abad stood stood and proved that they were still the team to beat this conference following a 67-65 win over Hidada.
In the first three quarters of the game GCT was fully fired up. Nava exploded for 9 points along with Carreon who added 6 points all from the three-point arc in the first quarter.
Abad muscled his way in the paint to help GCT in the second canto until late in the third when Hidada started to get back in the game.
Carbonel and Pasculado combined their strengths in the shaded area to match up with the GCT big guys. They combined for 11 points while Alvin Abellana went after loose balls in a determined way and Lacson showed his passing ability to score even before the third quarter ended.
In the final period, Hidada had a taste of the lead but GCT with a heart of a champion never gave up. Terminal grabbed back the lead with less than two minutes in the game, 60-58.
Lacson tied the score from his jump shot from the elbow spot with one minute remaining but Nava, the best player of the game, scored a three with a foul and completed the four-point play to hand GCT its second win in a row in the tournament supported by Al-Zugbi Sports Tailoring, MJE Industries, Art’s Cuisine and Timeout Sports Academy.
The reigning MVP from Toyota team, Montano Dela Cruz, dug deep in his arsenal to lead his team to another victory against the new team PSI 83-80.
Paul Taguba, named Best Forward last season, joined the scoring and supported Dela Cruz. Borcegue, the big man of Toyota, used his wide body to collar the offensive and defensive rebounds especially when the big guys of PSI, Baluyot and Mabarit, matched up against him at crunch time.
Sangalia and Dela Paz combined for 29 points as PSI tried to get back in the game in the fourth canto but the Dela Cruz maintained his composure and secured another victory for the Toyota team.
