Greek extremists accused of anti-immigrant attacks

ATHENS: An immigrant rights group is accusing a Greek far-right party of stepping up violent attacks on immigrants in an orchestrated "terror campaign."
United Against Racism and Fascist Violence Movement coordinator Petros Constantinou yesterday accused the Golden Dawn party of being behind "hundreds" of such attacks since last weekend's crucial national election.
Constantinou said Golden Dawn's strong showing in the poll — it won 18 seats in parliament — has emboldened it to step up such violence, and he accused police of covering up for the party.
Golden Dawn denies involvement in anti-immigrant attacks and insists it is a nationalist patriotic group campaigning on a platform of ridding the country of illegal immigrants and cleaning up crime-ridden neighborhoods.
