I read with interest the article by Abdulrahman Al-Rashed “Is another Somalia in the making?” (June 27). I fully agree with the views of the writer that the manner in which the international community is responding to the Yemen issue clearly indicates its non-seriousness.
The Saudi-led Arab coalition has effectively stopped the march of rebels in Yemen but it is also the responsibility of the international community to take measures to get this issue resolved at the earliest. Unfortunately, the world is busy getting cozy with the mastermind of the Yemen conflict for reasons beyond imagination. Yes, I am referring to Iran. The best way to deal with the Yemen issue is to punish Iran for fomenting unrest in the country by inciting and supporting a rebel group against the country’s legitimate government. The reason these Houthis are not surrendering appears to be the US-Iran imminent deal. They appear to be counting on this deal. The Arab world should follow in the footsteps of Saudi Arabia by forging strategic alliances with other global powers.
The US policies in the Middle East are ambiguous and are basically responsible for the current turmoil in the region. Washington’s dubious role in the Middle East has affected its standing in the region. Its stance toward Iran is also questionable and lends credence to reports about American plans of a new Middle East. In short the Arab world is going through a rough patch and Arab leaders and people need to tread carefully. May Allah help keep this region safe from its enemies.
