Medium of instruction in schools

It is refreshing to see in-depth reporting on local issues like the two-part report, “Should we or should we not educate our children in English.” It is a provocative and important issue that will undoubtedly create fierce debates and discussions.
As an expat living in Saudi Arabia for over 17 years and having a chance of being somehow associated with both English international schools and private Arabic schools, I can safely say that irrespective of the medium of instruction, the system of education lacks a great deal both in Arabic and English medium schools. There are exceptions, which are few and due their costly price tags, they are out of reach for many. It must be said, however, that tuition fees are not an indicator of quality as greed is no stranger in many businesses including education. But unfortunately in this sector the desire to maximize profits often takes precedence over providing a quality product.
All four of my children were taught on the “memorization model.” Like a bird shoving food down its babies’ throats, information is to be “swallowed” only to be regurgitated later for ridiculous exams that do not measure actual knowledge, skill or critical thinking.
While the schools and educational systems need a major overhaul and those teaching it require appropriate education and training in teaching, parents are often part of the equation of this ineffectual system. Many parents see only the future medical or engineering degree as the prize.
Some invest a great deal of money, energy and often, anxiety into helping, if not pushing their children toward that end, whether they want it or not. So, the goal is top scores, not well developed minds, attitudes and the skills of critical thinking, etc.
We can talk ad nauseum about the plight of education in Saudi Arabia and it has all been said before. Change is needed and all agree on that point. Thousands of Saudis and expats have been educated in Western countries and have experienced how education should be imparted, yet, the change is elusive. - Muhammad Saifudin, Alkhobar
