Saudi Arabia has reiterated its accusation that the Syrian regime is challenging the will of the international community by violating all UN charters.

Abdullah Al-Shaghroud, Saudi Ambassador to Holland, called on the UN to shoulder its moral and legal responsibilities and deal with all aspects of the Syrian crisis in a speedy manner and call to account all those responsible for the horrendous crimes committed by the Syrian regime against innocent civilians.

Al-Shaghroud, who is also Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative at the executive council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, was addressing a meeting of the group’s executive council.

“We hope that the regime’s evasion of any penal steps would not lead to casting suspicions on the earnestness of its commitment to the principles that have been agreed upon in the First Geneva Conference (on Syria’s gas attack on civilians)‚” he said.

Al-Shaghroud said: “The Syrian issue has entered a dangerous and sensitive stage accompanied by new developments that will determine the future of Syria and its people who have been subjected to unparalleled suppression.”

The UN Security Council meanwhile demanded immediate and “unhindered” access to the trapped Syrian civilians, in a non-binding statement that diplomats said sends a strong signal to Damascus.

UN aid agencies say there are more than 2.1 million refugees, and almost six million people displaced inside Syria. The body has not had access to about two million trapped civilians for months.
