BAGHDAD/DAMASCUS: Suicide bombers wreaked havoc in Iraq and Syria on Sunday killing 74 people. A suicide bomber slammed his explosive-laden car Sunday night into a busy cafe in Iraq’s capital, killing 35, authorities said.

The bombing at the cafe in Baghdad’s primarily Shiite Amil neighborhood took place, as it was full of customers. The cafe and a nearby juice shop is a favorite hang out in the neighborhood for young people, who filled the area at the time of the explosions. Another 45 people were wounded in the attack, Iraqi officials said.

Separately, eight suicide bombers targeted police and local officials in Rawa, northwest of Baghdad, killing eight people on Sunday, while seven died in other attacks, officials said.

Police Captain Mohammed Ahmed Al-Rawi said two suicide bombers on foot and another driving a vehicle rigged with explosives attacked the police headquarters for the area, while another driving a vehicle hit an army checkpoint at the town’s entrance. Another three bombers on foot and a fourth in a vehicle attacked the local administrative headquarters.

In Syria, a suicide bomber blew up a truck packed with explosives at an army checkpoint in Hama Sunday, killing at least 31 people, a monitoring group said. The UK-based watchdog said the death toll was likely to rise, as “there are dozens of wounded, some of them in critical condition.”
