More than 130 children aged between 6 to 12 participated in a program about safety and risk at home. The event was organized by the industrial security department at the King Abdul Aziz Port (KAP) in Dammam on Saturday.
“This program trained and taught young children how to tackle risk situations at home. We included practical demonstrations of risks at home so that children can avoid them, as well as some information about main causes of fire in our daily life,” Rashid Abdullah Al-Rashid, director of the industrial security department at KAP, said.
“The children experienced a live fire demonstration and evacuation, as well as a rescue mission. It also gave an opportunity to children to use an extinguisher on a real fire. However, children had been taught the procedures in case of fire by evacuating the house and calling 998 in fire-related emergencies. Also, children met with the firefighter team and took a tour to learn about the duties of firemen and got their advice on what to do in case of fire,” said Al-Rashid.
Al-Rashid said that such programs are important for young children and for everyone in society. “We need to educate our children on the serious nature of fire-related incidents at home. Therefore, this program is one of the annual programs that we provide each year to children so that we raise awareness about what to do in such instances. Our department also participated in the World Civil Defense Day which took place between 3-6 March this year.
At the end of program, children were given an activity to draw and express their experience about the full-day event. Some of their drawings were posted on a wall in front of public to encourage them to learn safety rules. Gifts and awareness messages were also distributed.
The industrial security department has a twitter account, @dammamseaport, which is an interactive tool to communicate with the public about fire hazards and management.
