Runaway housemaids

This refers to recent media report that number of runaway housemaids seeking refuge at the Sri Lankan mission in the Kingdom has doubled following the Saudi government’s enforcement of the Nitaqat program.
The Sri Lankan authorities need to take more concrete action to protect migrants leaving for unskilled jobs in the Middle East.
Corruption and inefficiency are a major cause for the misery of hapless housemaids, house drivers and other domestic servants.
It is unfortunate the government has failed to take meaningful steps to prevent Sri Lankan women seeking menial jobs in the Gulf and Middle East, leaving behind their young sons and daughters. — Rohan S., Dammam
