You have chosen your wedding dress, selected the venue, sent out invitations, and decided on the food, flowers, DJ and the photographer. Now all you need is to look your best and enjoy your night.
To help you get prepared for your big day and make sure you look your absolute best, here are a few bridal beauty dos and don’ts that we believe every bride should know from beautician and owner of Spa To Go Dania Khafaji.
Don’t get a mani or pedicure on the wedding day
Your hands play a most important part on your wedding day. Many would want to see the new ring so give them a reason to stare. “I would recommend you get your nails done one day before the wedding and choose basic colors such as nudes, French style or even red. Please don’t go crazy and chose black or blue,” said Khafaji. “On the wedding day you will be busy so you cannot afford to lose time waiting for your nail polish to dry. If your nails don’t dry thoroughly, you will risk ruining them.”
Don’t get a spray tan on the wedding day
Spray tan needs time for the extra bronzer to wash off and to get rid of the chemical smell left on the body. If you do spray tan on your wedding day, you will stain your gown and you will smell like a paint can. Khafaji recommends brides to exfoliate and spray tan at least three days before the wedding.
Don’t experiment with facials
We all look for a smooth and silky skin but on your wedding night you want more than that. You want to glow. “I highly recommend a facial but if you’re not used to facial products I say skip it this time. If you use new products and experiment you may end up having a bad skin reaction,” said Khafaji. “It will be difficult to apply makeup on a red face filled with rash or pimples. You can only moisturize and maybe apply some homemade facial masks.”
Don’t dye your hair in a new color
Khafaji recommends brides to always go back to their natural hair color at least for the wedding night. “I know Rihanna’s red hair is great and it is now a stylish look, but you don’t need to experiment and do a major color change before the wedding,” she said. “Always keep in mind that you will be looking back at your pictures 10 years from now and you don’t want to wonder what were you thinking when you did that.” Khafaji recommend soft, romantic colors and never dye your hair one day before. You will need to wash your hair at least twice before the wedding.
Do wear waterproof makeup
No matter how badly you want to hold back your tears, you will eventually see some, so you had better be prepared. “In this age there are different brands that present waterproof makeup. I don’t mean mascara only, choose your makeup wisely and be prepared to sweat from all the flashlights. Use waterproof foundation, eyeliner, lipstick, mascara and of course eye shadow because you don’t want to look like a panda in the pictures,” said Khafaji.
Do schedule a bridal beauty trial
Photoshop can only change on your photos but what about your real appearance. “I know that hair and makeup artists can be expensive. But hey, if you are not going to spend a little on your big day, when will you ever,” said Khafaji. “Great hair and makeup is always done by professional artists so start doing your research months before the wedding until you find the best makeup artist and hairdresser who can make you look your best,” she added.
Do prepare an emergency kit
To ensure nothing goes wrong, always make sure you have a backup plan for when disasters happen. “The bag should contain bobby pins, perfume, a nail file, tissues, lipstick, white thread and a needle, mint candy and pressed powder for when your forehead, nose and chin shines,” said Khafaji. You never know when you need them. Some brides even get extra shoes for when their feet get tired and they want comfortable dancing heels.
Do brighten your smile
Having a beautiful smile gives a brides confidence especially since they will be posing for a few hundred photos through the night.
“No bride wants her dress to be whiter that her teeth on the wedding night so make sure you book an appointment with your dentist and get them whitened,” said Khafaji. “After whitening your teeth, test your lipstick again and see if it matches because some shades of red can turn a little bluish. Ask your doctor not to make it too white so you don’t look fake.”
Last but not least, have fun at your wedding and don’t forget how beautiful you are.
