Braves sweep doubleheader against Rockies

DENVER, Colorado: Justin Upton hit his Major League-leading 10th homer as visiting Atlanta snapped a three-game losing streak in the opener of a doubleheader 4-3.
Evan Gattis swatted a go-ahead homer in the fourth and Dan Uggla had a two-run blast as the Braves improved to a Major League-best 14-5. The first-pitch temperature was 23 degrees, the coldest in franchise history at Coors Field and the coldest game in the majors since 1991.
Uggla's two-run shot made it 3-0 in the second. The Rockies got an RBI single from Jordan Pacheco in a two-run second and tied it in the third.
Braves 10 Rockies 2: Brothers B.J. and Justin Upton delivered back-to-back homers and had two RBIs apiece as visiting Atlanta went deep three times in each game of its doubleheader sweep at frigid Coors Field.
The Braves increased their Major League-leading home run total to 35. Justin Upton also homered in the opener and leads the majors with 11, while Juan Francisco hit a two-run shot in the nightcap and had three RBIs.
Cubs 4 Reds 2 (10 innings): Darwin Barney hit his first career home run on the road in the top of the 10th to help visiting Chicago snap a four-game losing streak and even the series at a game apiece.
Barney's blast to left lifted the Cubs after they gave up a one-run lead in the ninth and wasted a tremendous outing from starter Carlos Villanueva, who matched a career high with 8 1/3 innings and held Cincinnati's potent offense to two runs on three hits.
The Cubs led 2-1 when Villanueva left with one out in the ninth, but Joey Votto lined an RBI single up the middle on Carlos Marmol's first pitch to tie it at two.
Cardinals 2 Nationals 0: Adam Wainwright won his fourth consecutive start, pitching into the ninth inning, as visiting St. Louis handed Washington their eighth loss in the past 11 games.
Wainwright (4-1) joined New York's Matt Harvey as the only National League pitchers with four victories, holding Washington to five hits in 8 1/3 innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Allen Craig's and Carlos Beltran had RBIs in the fourth while Craig, Matt Holliday and Pete Kozma each finished with two hits for St. Louis.
Pirates 2 Phillies 0: Jeff Locke pitched six scoreless innings and Gaby Sanchez homered as visiting Pittsburgh shut down Philadelphia and kept Cole Hamels winless.
Brandon Inge, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day, delivered an RBI double in his second at-bat in a Pirates' uniform. Locke (2-1) allowed two hits and struck out six as Pittsburgh have won 10 of their last 14 games following a 1-5 start.
Hamels (0-3) allowed two runs and seven hits in eight innings.
Dodgers 7 Mets 2: Mark Ellis went 4-for-5 with two home runs to lead visiting Los Angeles to their second straight win following a six-game slide.
Ellis forged a 2-2 tie with a solo shot in the fifth - the 100th home run of his career - and broke the deadlock with a three-run shot in the seventh.
Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw allowed two runs on three hits and four walks in five laborious innings. New York starter Jonathon Niese was knocked out of the game with one out in the third inning when Ellis' comebacker caught him in the right leg. X-rays were negative and Niese was diagnosed with a contusion.
Brewers 6 Padres 3: Yuniesky Betancourt and Jonathan Lucroy had two RBIs apiece in a five-run second inning as visiting Milwaukee downed San Diego for their ninth straight victory.
Yovani Gallardo (2-1) allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings to win his second straight start and the Brewers have their longest winning streak since recording 10 straight victories in August 2003.
San Diego lost their fifth straight game despite the return of outfielder Carlos Quentin from an eight-game suspension stemming from an altercation that left Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke with a broken collarbone.
