Heavy rains plunge Riyadh into darkness

Heavy rains plunged the city into darkness late yesterday with black clouds blanketing the capital.
The rains, which lasted for an hour and occurred during the late afternoon rush hour caused traffic jams throughout the city. Since the Civil Defense authorities had warned the impending weather conditions, the motorists took extra caution during the heavy down pour.
The traffic officials were seen at strategic points in the city. Yesterday morning, motorists passed through water logged streets following Monday night rains.
Seyed Hamid Moulana, “Suddenly dark clouds started forming around at two o’clock in the afternoon, resembling a normal sunset in Riyadh. Then it followed with the downpour, one of the heaviest I’ve seen in the capital in recent times. It poured non-stop for nearly one hour, causing floods in so many underpasses and making it impassable. Added to this, the motorists, who did not adjust to the wet condition of the road created unnecessary accidents due to the negligence. Non-functioning of many traffic lights in important intersections also contributed to the misery which lasted for nearly three hours. Despite the short lived problems the rain was welcomed by all residents of Riyadh. The sky still promised as if there is many more to come.”
