The General Authority for Food and Drug Administration will compel foodstuff importers and domestic manufacturers to include nutritional data on all products.
The decision is a continuation of the approach of the commission in following up and monitoring of food products produced and marketed in the Kingdom.
The commission noted the importance of providing consumers with adequate information about the nutritional value contained in the food via the nutritional data card on food product packages.
The data includes amounts and percentages of calories, carbohydrates, proteins, fats and other components that affect the nutritional status, health, and safety of the consumer.
This decision is based on the functions and responsibilities of the FDA, which is to ensure the adherence to regulations that preserve public interest and prevent imported food stuffs from entering the Kingdom.
The decision also included preventing food products of local factories from entering the market if they do not comply with these regulations. The commission emphasized the importance of the full commitment to providing nutritional data on the packages of food products in accordance with what is stated in the Gulf Technical Regulations, which requires the display of nutritional data.
The commission said that it will give only six months for importers and food manufacturers in the Kingdom to comply with the new instructions, warning that the necessary measures against violators will be taken as of the 9th of Muharram.
