The Public Water Desalination Establishment in Jeddah has clarified that gases released from the chimneys are not harmful to residents.
Abdul Aziz Al Mazrou from the department said the noise heard by residents are completely normal. Residents of Jeddah Governorate know that the desalination plants work continuously and units only stop working during the periodic and emergency maintenance, to make sure Jeddah has enough water supply.
“Studies conducted on Jeddah desalination plant exhausts have proved that they meet the standards and regulations of General Presidency of Meteorology and Environment Protection. The establishment ensures that environmental rules are maintained through regular test samples,” he said, adding that gases and vapors released from the plant’s chimneys are an inevitable result of the burning process.
“They mainly contain water vapors,” he said, adding that  chimneys were raised to a height of 150 meters to guarantee safety of surrounding environment from any concentrated substances.
“The night noises of the Jeddah plant only occur at the start of operating. This process can be heard during the day as well, but it becomes more audible during the night,” he added.
The Jeddah plant complex has four plants including two thermal units with chimneys. The establishment is in the process of removing all chimneys, by replacing the old ones, to ensure continued water supply to Jeddah.
