Jeddah Islamic Port has received millions of tons of food and 560,000 head of livestock over the past month in preparation for Ramadan.
Director General of the General Port Authority, Musaed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Darees, said the port handled more than 411 TEUs. TEU is the abbreviation for twenty-foot equivalent unit, a unit of cargo capacity.
Al-Darees told local media that the first batch of cement and clinker arrived at the ports in Jeddah, Dammam and Jazan.
Another shipment will arrive soon at Yanbu Commercial Port, Jubail and Daba Ports.
To handle the cement and clinker the port authority allocated 17 docks in six commercial ports. It also provided enough yards for temporary storage. These yards conform to anti-pollution rules and regulations, he said.
He said the authority is expanding the container stations in Jeddah Islamic Port and will soon move some of the port's activities involving livestock and general commodities to Al-Layth Port.
King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam is seeing the construction of a new container station in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, Singapore Port and the Saudi Company for Containers, with an annual capacity of 2 million containers.
Al-Darees said there is overstoring at Jeddah Islamic Port because traders arrive late to fetch their goods. He said the authority has supplied the port with state-of-the-art equipment, good contracting practices and efficient employees.
