YouTube has transformed the way youth in Saudi society are expressing their views and ideas directly to their audience without any boundaries they might otherwise experience on traditional media platforms.
Satirical Saudi-made YouTube shows such as “Aaltayer,” which translates roughly as “On The Fly,” “La Yekthar,” and “Eysh Elly,” among others are now the leading YouTube channels in Saudi Arabia, with their huge fan base across the country.
One such new channel is Bambee (Pinkish), which debuted few weeks ago, garnering more than millions of views, shares and 70,000 channel subscriptions.
It drew both praise and criticism from viewers and the public.
At the introduction of the first episode, Yousef Ahmed, the person behind the idea, says: “Dear liberal person, dear secular person, you wanted an open society? Well we have invented one just for you! An illusion a fantasy world, and we have named it Bambee,”
“Bambee is world of illusion and fantasy where everything is open, lets starts the show,” Yousef Ahmed said in the introduction of segment.
The segment begins with a scene depicting what seems like a public high school room, where the students — both boys and girls — are present side by side, separated by a sheet hanging from the ceiling.
The video then fantasies how the classroom would react to a female or male instructor teaching them Arabic, music and geography.
Gender mixing is not allowed in public high schools, and the purpose of the video as described by the team behind was meant for general satire and for poking fun.
It still drew plenty of criticism and praise from the public online.
“This is a great and funny take on the issue, but you guys could have tuned down the presentation!” one tweeted.
Another tweeted, “This is really a bold move by you guys, are awesome, can’t wait for the second episode.”
The people behind Bambee announced on their twitter handle that they are working on a new episode to be released “soon.”
