Rise in Jeddah temperatures blamed on felling of trees

Environmentalists believe that large scale felling of trees by the municipality is a factor that contributed to rising temperatures in Jeddah besides damaging the environment and wastage of money.
“Municipality’s cutting down trees in Jeddah districts and throwing them to dumping grounds without any scientific supervision calls for intervention of concerned government departments to take appropriate measures,” said Muhammad Tajuddin, member of the board of directors of the Council of Saudi - Gulf Green Buildings, member of the World Green Building Council and a former consultant of the Jeddah Municipality.
On the other hand, a municipal official said it only cut down 180 trees that posed danger to the street lighting.
The municipality is only replacing Mioporo trees with local date palms and coconut palms, Spokesman of Jeddah Muncipality Sami Nawar, said.
