Kashmir skirmishes

It is reported that five Indian soldiers were shot dead and one seriously injured by Pakistani soldiers who crossed the Line of Control in the Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir.
Military authorities from both sides are reported to have spoken on the incident and while Indian side strongly protested on the incident, Pakistan has strongly rejected the allegations. Pakistani side reiterated on the cease-fire agreement done in 2003 and their commitment to abide by it.
Pakistani military sources complained in a press release on Wednesday that there were seen 186 incidents of violation on LoC by Indian side since January 2013. Now this is a very tricky situation in which there are allegations and counter allegations from both sides, leading to a lack of trust between the two long-feuding neighbors.
The recent killings have virtually shut the door on proposed peace talks that were expected to resolve decades-long disputes between the two sides. So there comes into picture the role of United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which was instituted in 1948 to keep an eye on any cease-fire violations from either side. Unfortunately since 1972, after the Simla Agreement India declined to accept the utility of UNMOGIP based on their assertion that Kashmir is a bilateral problem between Pakistan and India.
However, India never took any formal step to get rid of the United Nations mission in Kashmir but practically withdrew its interaction with the mission and reportedly since 1972 did not lodge any cease-fire complaints with them. So in the absence of practical recognition of the UN observers by one side, it is difficult to establish the veracity of complaints and claims of violations from either side, thus creating an atmosphere of perpetual mistrust between the two nuclear rivals. — Shaukat Ali, Dhahran
