The National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has vowed to pursue and charge those responsible for the death of a young orphan in Makkah from negligence.
Khaled Al-Fakhry, legal counselor and secretary-general of the national society, said the society is determined to follow up on the investigation concerning the two latest incidents.
The organization wants to identify individuals responsible and hold them accountable.
“We have forwarded our reservations concerning certain orphan care centers to the authorities,” Al-Fakhry added. “There should be a cadre of well-equipped specialists to deal with such cases, as working in this field falls within the prerogatives of charitable work and more attention should be provided to these children, who are left to the state’s care.”
A strong social backlash has emerged at the backdrop of the latest incidents recorded against orphans by social workers.
In one case an 18-year-old orphan died in his bedroom and wasn’t discovered for at least a day, although some sources claim the young man had not been discovered for three days. The orphan suffered from seizures. He refused medical treatment and ignored suggestions by orphanage staff members to remain with other wards of the center to ensure his safety.
In another incident, an orphan’s health seriously deteriorated due to alleged negligence of the social workers who ignored his severe case of sickle cell anemia over the past 19 years.
