A 50-year-old bridal thobe worn by 25 brides from the region is currently on display at the Qatifi House in Qatif, Eastern Province.
The dress, in hues of white and silver, embellished with silver embroidery and tiny roses in gold on the sleeves was created by its owner just a few days before her wedding.
Siham Al-Khneizi, a volunteer at the Qatifi House, said the traditional corner at the house displays many such dresses from the region and that the idea is to acquaint visitors with the beauty of their heritage.
The house also is an old one and was inhabited by around 30 people of a family at one time. Women of that time used to wear clothes made of light material to suit the desert environment they lived it. Their dresses were beautiful and modest.
Some clothes were imported from India while others were made by local women, although French fashion was most popular at that time. The Qatifi house has models of an old living room, a bride’s room and an old kitchen. It also displays an old village market with the popular coffee shop in the center of the market.
