New company to supervise school canteens

The Ministry of Education is currently studying the launching of a company to supervise school canteens in order to ensure quality food for boys and girls in schools across the Kingdom.
The company will be operating under Tatweer, the King Abdullah Education Development Project.
It will be responsible for enforcing hygienic standards and nutritional specifications in meals and drinks supplied by school canteens across the Kingdom.
The company will also make sure that varieties of low-calorie food and drink are available to children.
The ministry’s move will allay parents of students who have been complaining that meals supplied by school canteens endanger their children’s health and that canteens were only concerned with making profits.
Tatweer will insist on low-calorie foods rich in nutrients, including fruit, dates, milk, yogurt and nutritious sandwiches.
Tatweer will also take steps to install smart vending machines for food and drink across schools in order to reduce crowding at canteens.
