During our early days in the Kingdom we had only black & white TVs. At that time Syrian and Egyptian comedy serials were hits and had become popular for both the locals as well as the expatriates. The ones directed and produced by the most talented Ghawar from Syria (Duraid Lahham) were instant hits then.

In one such comedy show in which Yassin Bakoush, who was killed recently by a Syrian rocket, and late Hosni, took part with Ghawar, Hosni used to keep repeating a phrase “Iza aradna anarif maza fi Italya, yajib alayna anarif maza fi Brazil,” which meant ‘If we want to know what is in Italy, it compels us to know what is in Brazil.’ This dialogue had become quite popular in the Arab world.

Let us now inflect this phrase to suit the current situation: ‘If we want to know what is in Syria, it compels us to know what is in…’
